According to the Pakistan Embassy in Riyadh, all five victims were Pakistani nationals traveling together as pilgrims on Umrah pilgrimage journey from Pakistan. Embassy officials have reached out to Saudi authorities regarding repatriating their bodies back home.
“Our hearts are broken at this tragic loss of life,” according to an embassy spokesperson. “Our team is closely working with local authorities in providing assistance and support for those injured and families of the dead.”
Local Saudi media reported that the accident may have been caused by mechanical failure; an official investigation is currently under way.
