Hamas militants launched 10 rockets at Ashkelon, Israel early Saturday morning in one of their most dramatic acts yet, setting off air raid sirens and sending residents scrambling for shelter.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that several rockets were successfully intercepted by its Iron Dome missile defense system, while others fell in open areas and caused no casualties or major damages; emergency teams are currently conducting assessments in affected zones.
“This is one of the largest rocket attacks from Gaza that we’ve witnessed recently,” according to an IDF spokesperson. “Hamas bears sole responsibility and we stand ready to respond with force.”
Israel reportedly responded with targeted airstrikes against Hamas-controlled infrastructure in Gaza Strip.
Local authorities in Ashkelon issued temporary school closure orders and advised residents to remain near bomb shelters during a terror attack in their town. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned it, denouncing it as a cowardly act of aggression, promising an aggressive response.
United Nations and international observers have voiced concern over the possibility of renewed conflict, urging both sides to exercise restraint and avoid actions which could escalate violence further.
Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by Israel, the US, EU and others has yet to make an official claim of responsibility; however pro-Hamas media outlets praised its operation.
Situation remains tense with security forces on high alert and diplomatic efforts underway to prevent further escalation of tension.
