At 13 years old, Max begins to slow down, prompting his family to reflect on the preciousness of time. Rather than focusing on limitations, they choose to create one unforgettable journey together. Packing their 1992 Ford Explorer with treats and medical supplies, the trio departs from Northern California with the goal of reaching Julie’s childhood hometown in Bethany Beach, Delaware.
The book offers readers a unique vantage point on the American landscape. Through Max’s eyes, readers experience the Wild, Wild West of Wyoming, the majestic carvings of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and the rolling cornfields of the Midwest. The story is structured to show themes of gratitude, resilience, and the rediscovery of joy in life’s fleeting moments.
Despite his physical limitations, the journey allows Max to see life as a puppy again, finding renewed vigor at stops like the Snake River overlook in Idaho .
Dr. Julie Powell Hall, a Professor Emerita in Business Administration from Napa Valley College, wrote the book as a tribute to the real-life Max, whose spirit inspired her to look at life with new eyes. The book concludes with Max’s peaceful arrival in Delaware, where he reconnects with family history where his journey comes full circle in a touching and heartfelt conclusion.

Dr. Julie Powell Hall debuts her first inspirational book, Max’s Last Journey: Paws Across America. A native of Bethany Beach, Delaware, she transitioned from the corporate sector to academia, spending 17 years at Napa Valley College, where she retired as Professor Emerita in Business Administration. Dr. Hall, who holds a Ph.D. in Education, currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Delaware Technical College and is an avid traveler who has explored 46 states and 26 countries.
