Russia and Ukraine engaged in their first direct peace talks since three years, held in Istanbul. Russian negotiators presented an array of demands which have met strong resistance from Kyiv and its Western allies; talks aimed at finding an end to their ongoing conflict concluded without an armistice agreement, further underscoring deep divisions between both parties. Ukraine officials believe Russia’s conditions for peace include formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over five regions: Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Furthermore, Moscow insists that Ukraine adopt a policy of permanent neutrality by not joining military alliances such as NATO or limiting military capabilities; withdrawal of forces from these aforementioned territories as well as mutual renunciation of war reparations are among them.
