CAIR, the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the U.S., has harshly condemned Israel’s recent decision to allow limited aid trucks into Gaza as “completely insufficient and psychotic PR stunt” which does not address an escalating humanitarian crisis in the region. Cair has expressed this sentiment to Al Jazeera.
On May 19, 2025, Israel granted nine aid trucks entry to Gaza–the first such delivery in almost three months. While Israeli officials presented this as a humanitarian gesture, CAIR contends that this minimal aid is no more than an attempt by Israeli officials to appease international criticism while making no substantive attempts at relieving conditions faced by Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. CAIR stated: “Israel’s decision to allow even a trickle of aid into Gaza… will do nothing to alleviate famine risk,” as CAIR stated on Al Jazeera +2. PBS +2 | Truthout | Truthout
Humanitarian organizations have shared CAIR’s concerns, noting that current aid deliveries are grossly insufficient to meet Gaza’s basic needs. According to UN estimates, at least 500 trucks of aid would be required daily just to cover basic necessities; and World Health Organization warned two million Gazans face starvation due to Israeli blockades on food and medical supplies – as reported by Al Jazeera +2 and Truthout as well as The Guardian +2. (They all report as well.) The Washington Post provided coverage.
As part of its response to Gaza’s mounting humanitarian crisis, the US has supported the formation of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). GHF plans to launch by May 2025 with an initial target of providing 300 million meals within 90 days – however this initiative has drawn considerable criticism from established humanitarian groups such as UN aid chief Tom Fletcher who expressed reservations over its neutrality and effectiveness; Fletcher stated his preference that time not be wasted on U.S. plans when existing UN strategies and resources exist ready for immediate deployment.
As the humanitarian situation in Gaza worsens, CAIR and other organizations are calling for immediate and substantial international intervention to halt further loss of life and mitigate an all-out famine. They urge Israel to lift their blockade in order to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza to avoid full-scale famine and its accompanying loss of life.
Cair remains under increasing international pressure to intervene and provide essential aid in order to stop further loss of life, with widespread destruction in Gaza, critical healthcare facilities targeted, and civilians facing extreme hardship as a result of displacement.
